Historic Temple Square
Salt Lake City was laid out with Temple Square as itsheart. It is located in thecenter of North Temple, West Temple, South Templeand Main Street. In this 10 acre area you will find the Mormon Temple that was built between 1853 and 1893, two large visitor's centers, and the Salt Lake Tabernacle. The public is invited to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's free weekly Sunday television and radio broadcast in the Tabernacle at 9:30 a.m. (the audience must be seated by 9:15), the Choir's rehearsal every Thursday at 8 p.m., and the organ recital at noon Monday through Saturday and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. Museum of Church History and Art
Just west of Temple Square is the Museum of Church History and Art. (801) 240-3310. Art exhibits and artifacts related to the L.D.S. church from the mid-1800's to the present are shown.
The Family History Library
The Family History Library is located across the street just west from Temple Square. It is the largest genealogical library in the world and offers millions of original records on film, books, microfilm, and CD.
Brigham Young Monument
Just east of Temple Square is the Brigham Young Monument, a larger-than-life statue of the colonizing church leader. It was erected in 1897.
The Beehive House
The Beehive House and the Lion House next door are the homes of early Mormon church president Brigham Young and his family. Tours are offered at the Beehive House which is filled with antiques from that time period and lunch and dinner are served at the Lion House. 67 E. South Temple, Salt Lake City, (801) 240-2672.
The Joseph Smith Memorial Building
Formerly the Hotel Utah. Its lobby has been elegantly restored with a stained glass ceiling and intricate moldings. It is now a community center operated by the LDS church. Tours are offered daily as well as an hour-long film. Free tickets can be obtained by calling (801) 240-4383. The building also has a chapel, a store, two restaurants, a genealogical center, and a great view of the Temple. (801) 240-1266, located at Main and South Temple in Salt Lake City.
Church Office Building
Headquarters for the LDS Church. A magnificent view of Salt Lake City can be viewed from the observation decks on the 26th floor. 801-240-2190. Open Mon-Fri 9am - 5pm (4:30pm during winter months).
This Is The Place Heritage Park
Park includes a huge monument that marks the end of the 1300 mile Mormon Pioneer Trail, and Old Deseret Village, a living history museum that recreates a typical Mormon community between 1847-1869. With more than 40 historic buildings and exciting daily activities, the park offers a delightful mix of education and entertainment. 2601 Sunnyside Ave. (800 South), Salt Lake City, (801) 582-1847.
The Cathedral of the Madeleine
This Roman Catholic church was completed in 1909 and took 9 years to build. The church currently serves as the cathedral of the Diocese of Salt Lake City. Detailed tours are available Sunday afternoons. 331 E. South Temple.
Governor's Mansion
Built in 1902, this mansion has housed many of Utah's governors. Open to the public for free tours Tuesday and Thursday from 2-4pm. 603 E. South Temple.
Utah State Capital
Located on the hill overlooking downtown, this building was constructed between 1912 and 1916, using granite from nearby Little Cotton Canyon. Guided tours of the Capital are given every half-hour from 9am to 4pm, Mon - Fri.
The Historic Heber Valley Railroad
This site has a turn-of-the-century steam engine, which runs regularly scheduled tours year-round. It departs from Heber City and Vivian Park in Provo Canyon. 450 S. 600 West, Heber.
Wheeler Historic Farm
This farm is a restoration of the turn-of-the-century dairy farm of Henry J. Wheeler. It is a representation of the rural lifestyle in salt Lake County from 1890-1920. 6351 S 900 E, open from dawn to dusk. Admission is free, however, some fees apply for events.
